A true HEPA filter is independently rated to capture at least 99.97% of airborne particles at 0.3 microns — the hardest particle size for any filter to trap. "HEPA-type," "HEPA-like" and "99% filtration" are marketing phrases, not the certified standard, and typically describe a weaker filter in an otherwise normal air purifier.
What is a true HEPA filter, and why does 0.3 microns matter?
0.3 microns is the "most penetrating particle size" — the size that's hardest for any filter to catch, not the smallest particle that exists. A true HEPA filter rated to catch 99.97% of particles at that size catches an even higher percentage both larger and smaller than it.
This is genuinely counter-intuitive. Very small particles get caught by diffusion — they bounce around randomly and hit fibers. Larger particles get caught by direct impact. It's the mid-sized 0.3-micron particles that slip through most easily, since neither mechanism works as well on them. That's why the HEPA standard is defined at that exact size instead of the smallest measurable one. It's the worst-case test, not a cherry-picked easy one.
True HEPA vs "HEPA-type": how to spot real air purifier claims
"HEPA" or "True HEPA" means a filter has been tested and certified to the 99.97%-at-0.3-microns standard. "HEPA-type," "HEPA-like" or "99% HEPA" are uncertified marketing terms for a filter that resembles HEPA media but hasn't met — or hasn't been tested against — the actual standard.
Manufacturers can legally use these near-miss phrases because they're technically accurate, not false claims. The catch is the performance gap between a true HEPA filter and a HEPA-type one can be substantial, and it's exactly the gap behind "I bought an air purifier and I still have allergy symptoms" in owner reviews. Brands like LEVOIT, Coway, Winix and Blueair mostly build around certified True HEPA now, but always check the spec sheet, not just the word "HEPA" in a listing title.
Does a HEPA filter handle VOC, smoke and odor — or just dust and allergens?
Just dust and allergens. HEPA filtration is a mechanical, physical-particle standard — it captures dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores and similar solid particles. It does essentially nothing for gases, smoke odor, VOC or cooking smells, which pass straight through a HEPA layer.

This is why most effective air purifiers pair a HEPA filter with a separate activated carbon layer. The carbon adsorbs gases and odors that HEPA physically can't trap. CADR, air changes per hour and square footage — is HEPA rating enough?
No — filter quality and room-coverage sizing are separate questions. A true HEPA filter in an unit undersized for your square footage still underperforms, because CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate, how much filtered air it actually moves) matters just as much as filtration percentage.
AHAM, the industry body behind the CADR test, recommends sizing a purifier to deliver roughly 4 to 5 air changes per hour for the room it's covering. A unit with a great HEPA rating but a low CADR for your square footage will filter thoroughly but too slowly to keep up with a busy household.

Most current HEPA purifiers add a built-in air quality sensor driving an auto mode, ramping the fan up when PM2.5 spikes and down again once the air clears. That keeps noise low and running cost energy efficient compared with running on high constantly.
A quiet low speed matters most for a bedroom, since noise is the top reason owners stop running a purifier at night — which defeats the point of owning one. EPA guidance on PM2.5 exposure is the benchmark most auto-mode sensors are tuned against, so a purifier's app or display reading PM2.5 in real time is a genuinely useful feature, not a gimmick.
