Why is 30 to 50 percent the target?
This band balances two opposing problems. Above 50 to 60 percent, moisture feeds mold, dust mites, and condensation; below 30 percent, air dries out skin, sinuses, and wood. The 30 to 50 percent range keeps both extremes in check for comfort and health.
It also happens to be where a home simply feels right, neither muggy nor parched. Because it sits at the center of a healthy indoor climate, most air-quality monitors and smart thermostats flag readings that stray outside it.
Should the target change with the seasons?
Yes, slightly. In cold weather, aim for the lower end, around 30 to 40 percent, because higher humidity condenses on cold windows and walls and can cause hidden moisture damage. In summer, the upper part of the range is usually fine as long as it stays under 60 percent.
The colder the outdoor air, the lower your indoor humidity generally needs to be to avoid window condensation. Watching for fog on the glass is a simple, no-cost way to tell when you have pushed it too high indoors.
How do you actually hit the range?
Measure first with a hygrometer, then correct. If readings run low, a humidifier adds moisture; if they run high, a dehumidifier, ventilation, or air conditioning removes it. Adjust gradually and re-check, since rooms and seasons behave differently.
