Do you need a humidifier or a dehumidifier for dry air?

A hygrometer reading under roughly 30% relative humidity, or symptoms like static shocks, dry skin, sinus irritation and cracked houseplant leaves, point to a humidifier. A reading over roughly 50%, a musty smell, window condensation or visible mold point to a dehumidifier.

How quiet does a humidifier need to be, and does it actually help sinus symptoms?

Ultrasonic humidifiers are the quietest option by a wide margin, since they have no fan. Evaporative and warm mist units run a little louder but are still bedroom-appropriate. Adding moisture back into dry air is a well-established way to ease sinus irritation, dry throat and static-related discomfort overnight.

Noise matters most for a bedroom or nursery, where a humming fan on an evaporative unit can be the difference between a humidifier that stays switched on and one that gets unplugged after a week. If sinus relief is the actual goal rather than general comfort, pairing the humidifier with the ideal 30–50% relative humidity band, not maximum mist output, is what the evidence supports.

Placement changes the sinus benefit too.
