A portable air conditioner is the compromise appliance of home cooling: it exists because a window unit won't fit, isn't allowed, or isn't practical. That compromise is real — a portable unit is generally less efficient, louder inside the room and more expensive to run than a comparable window unit. But for a rental with casement windows, a converted attic room, or an apartment where the lease forbids anything hanging outside, it is frequently the only appliance that will genuinely lower the temperature rather than just move air around. Choosing well comes down to three decisions: honest capacity, hose configuration, and where the condensate ends up.
How many BTUs do you actually need for a 400 sq ft bedroom?
For roughly 400 square feet of square footage, plan on about 9,000 to 10,000 BTU of SACC-rated cooling capacity. The long-standing room-AC guidance is around 20 BTU per square foot, adjusted up about 10 percent for a sun-facing room and up again for a top floor or high ceilings.

The complication with portables specifically is that two different numbers appear on the same product. Since 2017, units sold in the United States must be rated in SACC — Seasonally Adjusted Cooling Capacity — which accounts for the heat a portable unit leaks back into the room from its hose and its infiltration of outside air. Many listings still display the older, larger ASHRAE-style figure alongside it, and the SACC number is typically substantially lower. A unit advertised as "14,000 BTU" may carry a SACC rating closer to 9,000 or 10,000. Airflow, measured in CFM, is a separate spec from cooling capacity — a unit can move a lot of air without cooling it much. Size against the SACC figure and you will not be surprised; size against the marketing number and you will be.
Beyond floor area, the adjustments that matter are the ones owners most often forget. Add capacity for a kitchen, for a room with more than two regular occupants, for a wall of west-facing glass, and for a poorly insulated attic conversion. Subtract for a heavily shaded ground-floor room. Oversizing is not a free safety margin either. A unit that reaches its setpoint too quickly short-cycles, removes less moisture, and leaves a room feeling cold and clammy rather than genuinely comfortable.
Is a dual-hose portable air conditioner worth the extra money?
In a hot climate or a room above about 300 square feet, usually yes. A single-hose unit exhausts conditioned room air outdoors, creating negative pressure that pulls warm unfiltered air in through every gap. A dual-hose unit draws its condenser air from outside instead.

Dual-hose units cost more, take up slightly more window space, and are heavier. They are also the version that behaves closest to how buyers expect an air conditioner to behave. If your budget only stretches to a single-hose model, the practical mitigations owners report as effective are wrapping the exhaust hose with insulation, keeping the hose as short and straight as the layout allows, and sealing the window kit properly rather than accepting the loose foam panel it ships with.
Where does the water go, and will it shut off overnight?
Most modern portables are partly self-evaporating: condensate is flung onto the condenser coil and blown out through the exhaust hose, much like a dehumidifier that dumps its own collected water instead of storing it. In humid weather that system saturates, the internal reservoir fills, and the unit stops cooling until you drain it — often at 3am.

This is worth planning for before purchase rather than after. Nearly every unit has a continuous-drain port near the base; running a short hose from it to a floor drain, a shower tray, or a small condensate pump eliminates the overnight shutdown entirely. The second water-related issue is end-of-season storage. Water left standing in the reservoir over winter is the usual origin of the musty smell owners report on first startup the following summer. A mid-size portable typically draws between 900 and 1,400 watts while the compressor is running. Actual cost depends on how often it cycles, but a unit that runs most of a hot afternoon uses meaningfully more electricity than a window unit of the same rated capacity.
Energy efficient SEER ratings and running cost
The efficiency gap comes back to the same physics as the hose discussion. Energy spent cooling air that is immediately replaced by warm infiltrating air is energy wasted. That is why a portable's SEER-equivalent efficiency rating sits below an equivalent window unit and well below a ductless system. An ENERGY STAR label on a portable model is a genuine signal worth checking, since the category's baseline efficiency is already weaker than window or split units. It does not make portables a bad purchase — it makes them a purchase you make for a reason, not by default.
Running cost also falls sharply with good habits rather than a more energy efficient appliance. Closing blinds on sun-facing windows during the day, sealing the gap around the window kit, cooling one occupied room rather than an open floor plan, and setting a realistic temperature instead of the lowest number on the display all help. Should you buy a portable unit at all?
Buy a portable when a window install is genuinely impossible or prohibited, when you need to move cooling between rooms, or when you only need spot cooling for one occupied space. Otherwise a window unit or a ductless system will cool better for less money over time.

The honest framing is that portables win on constraints, not on performance. Casement and sliding windows that no standard window kit fits, buildings with rules against exterior projections, historic windows you cannot modify, rooms where the only window is also the fire egress — these are all situations where a portable is the correct answer and the alternatives are not options at all. Remote control operation, standard on almost every model from Midea, Whynter and DeLonghi, is one of the few conveniences that genuinely carries across the whole category regardless of price. Spot cooling one room you actually occupy, rather than trying to condition a whole floor, is where a portable performs closest to its rating.
