Heating is the most direct lever most homeowners pull on their indoor climate — the temperature, humidity and air quality of the space they actually live in. Before you buy anything, it helps to understand what a heater is really doing. The category with the biggest sticker or the loudest marketing claim is rarely the one that solves your specific problem.

Which Type of Space Heater Fits Your Room?

Room size, insulation and heater wattage decide the fit — not the brand on the box. A 1500 watts space heater, close to the practical ceiling for a standard household outlet, comfortably warms roughly 150–300 square feet in an averagely insulated room. Poor insulation, high ceilings or a drafty window shrink that range fast.

Two heaters rated at the same wattage can feel completely different in the same room. One loses output to a single-pane window. The other doesn't. That's why heat type matters more than raw power once you're near that wattage ceiling. Convection heaters warm the air in a room, which spreads more evenly but takes longer. Radiant heaters warm people and surfaces directly, which feels faster but does nothing for anyone outside their line of sight.

Ceramic and fan-forced heaters

A ceramic heater uses a ceramic plate and a small fan-forced blower to push warm air across a room quickly. It's the most common style of portable heater sold today, from budget models to premium picks from DREO and Lasko. Fan-forced heat spreads evenly, though it runs louder than heaters without a fan.

Infrared heaters and radiant heat

An infrared heater — often built around a quartz element — produces radiant heat instead of warming the air. It heats people and surfaces directly, the way sunlight does. That makes an infrared heater feel warm almost instantly, but it does nothing for anyone sitting outside its beam.

Oil-filled radiators for overnight heat

An oil-filled radiator heats a sealed reservoir of oil, then radiates that heat slowly through metal fins. There's no fan, so it stays close to silent. It's the standard pick for overnight heating in a bedroom, because it holds warmth for a while after it shuts off.

Tower heaters and oscillation

A tower heater is a tall, narrow unit built for a small footprint. Most add oscillation, so the heater sweeps side to side instead of aiming at one spot. Vornado and Lasko both build well-reviewed tower models with a broad sweep angle.

How Many Watts and BTU Does a Heater Need?

Most portable electric heaters top out at 1500 watts, which converts to roughly 5,100 BTU of heat output. Check that BTU figure against your room's square footage before you buy — not the price tag, and not the brand name.

BTU output scales directly with wattage on an electric heater, so a lower-wattage unit simply won't keep up in a larger room. Manufacturers list both figures on the box or in the specs. Compare them against your actual room size before you buy, not after you've unpacked it.

Is a Portable Electric Heater Energy Efficient?

Every electric heater converts nearly all of its energy into heat, so they're all technically energy efficient in that narrow sense. The real question is running cost — what it costs to run daily, not how it's marketed on the box.

A 1500-watt portable heater run at full output draws about one kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity per hour. Check your utility's rate per kWh, then multiply by hours used, for a real running cost instead of a guess. Amazon Basics and other budget brands cost the same to run as premium ones at the same wattage. Efficiency here is about usage habits, not the badge on the front.

Running cost and thermostat control

A built-in thermostat is the single biggest lever on running cost. It cycles the heater off once the room reaches your set temperature, instead of running at full power constantly. Look for a heater with an adjustable thermostat, not just a high/low switch.

What Tip-Over and Overheat Safety Features Matter?

Tip-over protection and overheat protection are the two features worth treating as non-negotiable. Tip-over protection shuts the heater off if it's knocked over. Overheat protection shuts it off if internal temperatures climb too high.

Never run a heater on an underrated extension cord. Can a Space Heater Provide Supplemental Heat Safely?

Yes — a space heater is designed to provide supplemental heat to one room, not replace a home's central system. Used that way, alongside a lower central thermostat setting, it can genuinely cut a heating bill.

Running a space heater on top of an unchanged central setting just adds cost. It doesn't replace it. The EPA and most utility guidance agree on this pattern: zone heating one or two occupied rooms while the rest of the house runs cooler is the standard way to save money. It isn't a shortcut around a working furnace — it's a deliberate trade of comfort for cost in the rooms you actually use.
