A fan heater warms the surrounding air and uses a fan to circulate it, gradually raising a whole room’s temperature. A radiant, or infrared, heater instead emits energy that directly warms the people and objects in its line of sight, giving fast, targeted warmth. Fan heaters suit enclosed rooms; radiant heaters suit spot heating in open or drafty spaces.

How does a fan heater work?

A fan-forced electric heater passes air over a hot element — usually a ceramic plate or wire coil — and blows the warmed air into the room. This convection approach raises the temperature of the whole air volume fairly evenly, so an enclosed room warms up throughout rather than in one spot.

The trade-offs are audible fan noise and a quick temperature drop once it switches off, because it is the air, not the surfaces, holding the heat. In a well-sealed room, this is an efficient way to manage the indoor climate, and most fan heaters list both wattage and BTU output on the box.

How does an infrared heater give off radiant heat?

An infrared heater emits radiant heat that travels in straight lines and warms the people and objects it strikes directly, rather than heating the air first. You feel warmth almost instantly if you are within its line of sight, much like standing in sunshine.

Many infrared heaters use a quartz tube or quartz element to generate that radiant heat efficiently, glowing visibly as they run. It does not rely on warming a whole room of air, so an infrared heater stays effective in drafty or open spaces where convected heat would drift away. It also runs silently with no fan.

Which space heater type should you choose — ceramic, oil-filled, or quartz?

Beyond the fan-versus-radiant split, the heating element itself changes how a space heater feels in daily use.

Which type is more energy efficient and lower running cost to run?

Neither type is inherently more energy efficient at converting watts to heat — both are close to 100 percent efficient electric resistance heat. The real difference is how much of that heat you actually use.

A fan heater's running cost depends on how well the whole room holds warmth once the air is heated. An infrared heater's running cost, in contrast, depends on staying in its direct line of sight. Pick the type that wastes less heat for how you actually sit or move through the room. Running cost follows from that choice more than from the wattage rating itself.

Tip-over and overheat safety

Both fan and infrared heaters should include tip-over protection that cuts power if the unit is knocked over. They should also have overheat protection that shuts the unit down if internal temperatures climb too high. Check for both before buying either type. A radiant or infrared heater earns its keep in a garage, workshop, or covered patio. Those spaces are too leaky or drafty for fan-forced heat to hold a steady BTU output. It also suits a bathroom, where you want instant warmth on your body the moment you step out of the shower, not a slow rise in room air.

Running cost in these fringe spaces usually favors radiant heat, because you are not paying to heat air that immediately leaks back outside. Once the space is enclosed and reasonably tight, a fan-forced electric heater tends to win instead. It keeps the whole room at temperature rather than just the person facing it.
