An oil-filled radiator heats a sealed reservoir of oil inside its metal fins with an electric element, and the hot oil then warms the metal, which radiates and convects heat into the room. The oil is a heat store, not a fuel — it's never burned or used up, so the heater never needs refilling.

What is the oil actually for?

The oil is a thermal reservoir. An electric element warms it, the oil spreads that heat evenly through all the fins, and the large warm metal surface releases radiant heat to the room slowly and steadily. The oil is sealed in for life — it's a heat-transfer medium, not a fuel that gets consumed.

This is the point most people misunderstand: an oil-filled radiator doesn't burn oil the way a furnace burns fuel. The oil simply holds and moves heat better than the metal alone would. That's what gives the heater its signature slow, even, long-lasting warmth. Because the oil is never depleted, you never top it up, and there's no fuel to store for the life of the unit. How does the heat get from the oil into the room?

This trade-off defines the category. You won't feel warmth in seconds the way you would in front of an infrared or fan heater — it takes time to bring all that oil and metal up to temperature. Does an oil-filled radiator dry out the air like other heaters?

It dries the air less aggressively than a fan heater, because it has no fan blowing air across a hot element — but it still warms the air, and warming any air lowers its relative humidity. Over a long winter, a room heated this way can still drift toward the dry end of the comfortable range.
