Most home-comfort guidance puts the ideal indoor humidity range at roughly 30–50% relative humidity year-round. Below that range, air feels dry and static-prone. Above it, mold, dust mites and musty odors become measurably more likely — and the target can shift a few points with outdoor temperature.
Why is there a relative humidity range instead of one exact number?
Because the right target shifts slightly with outdoor temperature. In a cold winter climate, keeping indoor relative humidity toward the lower end (around 30–35%) helps prevent window condensation. In summer, the upper end, toward 50%, is easier to maintain and still comfortable.
Chasing one exact number isn't necessary for most homes, since humidity naturally drifts with the season and how many people and pets are in the space. How do you measure indoor humidity, and what about sinus symptoms?
With a hygrometer — a small, inexpensive gauge that reads relative humidity, often bundled with a thermometer. It's the cheapest, most useful device in the entire indoor-climate category, and the right first purchase before buying a humidifier or dehumidifier at all.

A cool mist humidifier releases room-temperature moisture and is generally the safer pick around kids and pets, since there's no hot water involved. Match tank capacity and mist output to your room's square footage, not the biggest tank on the shelf. A one-gallon tank suits a bedroom; a large open living area needs several gallons or a unit rated for higher mist output to keep pace.
Runtime is simple math: a bigger tank in gallons and a lower mist output setting both stretch how long a humidifier runs before refilling, which matters most overnight. A unit that empties a small tank in six hours on high defeats the point of running it while you sleep.
Humidistat, auto shut-off and quiet operation — is a humidifier energy efficient?
A built-in humidistat is the feature that matters most — it holds a set relative humidity automatically instead of running the humidifier constantly. Auto shut-off protects the unit and the room once the tank runs dry or the target humidity is reached.
Every humidifier draws relatively little power, so they're inherently energy efficient compared with heating or cooling appliances. A quiet unit matters for a bedroom; ultrasonic models are typically the quietest, since they have no fan or heating element running.
Filter and essential oil — how do you reach and hold the right level?
Measure first with a hygrometer, then treat the direction the reading is off: a humidifier for a reading under 30%, a dehumidifier for a reading over 50%. An evaporative model's filter needs regular replacement to keep working properly and to avoid growing mold in the wick itself.
