Watch for a system that won't turn on, runs constantly, or short-cycles — switching on and off every few minutes. Heat blowing when you called for cooling, a blank screen, or repeated low-power resets all point to a mis-wired or missing C-wire.

Geofencing, learning and scheduling behaving correctly
Give geofencing a day or two to confirm it recognizes when you leave and return, and check that any learning mode is adjusting the schedule sensibly rather than picking odd times. A programmable schedule you set manually should also run exactly as entered.
Remote sensor readings and programmable schedule accuracy
If you added a remote sensor, confirm the app is actually using its reading, not just the thermostat's built-in sensor, for the rooms and times you assigned. A sensor reading that never changes usually means it lost connection.

Call an HVAC technician if any mode fails to run, if you see sparks or smell burning, or if your system uses high-voltage, heat pump, or multi-stage wiring you can't confidently match. These setups are easy to miswire and can damage equipment.
There's no shame in it — heat pumps and multi-stage systems have extra terminals that trip up many DIY installs. A quick professional check protects both the equipment and your comfort.
Keep the old thermostat's wire labels or a quick photo before you remove it, since matching wire colors back to the correct terminals is the single most useful thing you can hand a technician if something needs fixing later.
