Sizing an air purifier for a large room is the one calculation worth doing before you spend anything, because it is where the marketing coverage figures and the real-world numbers diverge most. Getting the indoor climate of a big space genuinely cleaner comes down to two figures — the room's air volume and how many times an hour you want to filter it — and a purifier's CADR rating that meets them. How do you calculate the air purifier size you need for large rooms, by square footage?
Start from air changes per hour (ACH), the number of times a purifier filters the room's full air volume in an hour. For a large room where air quality matters, aim for four to five ACH. Do the same arithmetic for your own room and you have a hard target to shop against, instead of trusting a coverage claim on the box.
What is the AHAM two-thirds rule, and does it work for a 1000 sq ft room?
It is a shortcut that lands in the same place: your purifier's CADR should be at least two-thirds of the room's floor area in square feet, assuming an eight-foot ceiling. A 400-square-foot room therefore wants a CADR of about 267 or more — matching the full ACH calculation — and a 1000 sq ft open room wants roughly 667.
The two-thirds rule bakes in about four to five air changes per hour, which is why it works as a quick check.
