Yes, from the air. A True HEPA air purifier captures airborne mold spores, which typically range from about 1 to 20 microns, well within what HEPA traps. What it cannot do is fix the moisture or surface mold producing those spores, so filtration controls the airborne count while the underlying source keeps releasing more.
How well does HEPA capture mold spores?
Very well. Mold spores mostly fall between 1 and 20 microns, and True HEPA media captures 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns — the hardest size — so larger spores are caught with room to spare as air passes through the filter.
The catch is that a filter only cleans spores already airborne. It does nothing about a colony growing behind a wall or under a sink, which keeps feeding fresh spores into the indoor climate.
Why won't a purifier solve a mold problem?
Mold grows wherever there is moisture and a surface to feed on. A purifier removes the spores that reach it but never addresses the damp, so as long as the source stays wet, it produces spores faster than any filter clears them.
Lasting control means finding and drying the moisture source, then remediating the visible growth — filtration is the air-quality layer on top of that work, not a substitute for it.
Does humidity control matter alongside filtering?
Strongly. Mold struggles to grow when relative humidity stays below roughly 50%, so pairing a purifier with moisture control — fixing leaks, ventilating damp rooms, running a dehumidifier — attacks the cause while the filter manages airborne spores.
Keeping the indoor climate on the drier side of that band does more to prevent mold than any air cleaner can do after spores are already in the air.
Should the purifier have a carbon stage too?
It helps. Active mold often produces a musty odor from gaseous compounds that HEPA cannot trap. An activated-carbon layer adsorbs much of that smell, so a HEPA-plus-carbon unit addresses both the spores and the odor together.
Carbon does not stop mold either, but it makes a damp-smelling room more bearable while you deal with the moisture behind it.
