Not well. Evaporative (swamp) coolers cool by evaporating water into the air, which only works when the air is dry enough to absorb more moisture. In humid climates the air is already near saturation, so cooling is weak and the added humidity can make a room feel muggier. They perform best in hot, dry conditions.

Why does humidity stop an evaporative cooler from working?

An evaporative cooler chills air by evaporating water into it, and evaporation only happens readily when the surrounding air is dry. In humid air that's already close to saturated, very little extra moisture can evaporate, so the temperature drop shrinks and the cooler mostly just adds dampness.

This is the difference between dry heat and a muggy climate. The same machine that feels refreshing in a desert can feel clammy in a coastal summer, because the moisture it relies on has nowhere to go in already-humid air.

What conditions does a swamp cooler need — dry climate or low humidity?

Indoor units need a steady supply of fresh outdoor air, usually a window or door left cracked, so moist air can escape instead of building up. Outdoor models, common on patios and job sites, don't have that constraint since the open air carries humidity away on its own.

Running an indoor evaporative cooler with windows sealed is the fastest way to defeat it, since the moisture it adds has nowhere to go and humidity in the room climbs with every hour of use, regardless of climate.

Portable vs tower evaporative coolers: does oscillation matter?

Both portable and tower styles use the same core cooling pad and water tank system. The shape mostly changes footprint and how far the airflow throws, not whether humid air defeats the cooling effect.

A portable unit on casters, like many NewAir and Honeywell models, moves room to room and often includes oscillation to spread cooled air across a wider area instead of a single narrow stream.

Tower evaporative coolers and oscillation

A tower-style cooler has a slim vertical profile and typically oscillates by default, which helps in a dry climate but does nothing to fix the humidity problem in a muggy one — moving damp air around a room doesn't make it drier.

What specs matter — CFM, airflow, water tank, cooling pad?

CFM (cubic feet per minute) measures airflow, and it's the number to size against square footage. A higher-CFM unit moves more air through the cooling pad, which matters more in dry conditions where evaporation is actually happening.

Match CFM to the room's square footage and ceiling height rather than buying the biggest number available — an oversized unit in a humid space just moves more damp air, it doesn't cool it any better.

Water tank, cooling pad, and ice pack

The water tank feeds the cooling pad, which is where evaporation actually happens; some models add an ice pack compartment for a short extra boost. None of that changes the fundamental limit humidity places on the system, indoor or outdoor.

A dirty or mineral-caked cooling pad also loses effectiveness over time regardless of climate, so rinsing or replacing it each season keeps a unit performing anywhere near its rated temperature drop.

Is an evaporative cooler energy efficient for humid rooms?

Yes, in terms of running cost — an evaporative cooler draws far fewer kWh than a compressor-based air conditioner, since it's just a fan and a water pump. But energy efficient only matters if the cooler actually cools, and in a humid room it largely doesn't.

For humid climates, refrigerant-based cooling — a window unit, portable AC, or mini-split — both lowers temperature and removes moisture, which is what actually improves comfort. In a genuinely dry climate, though, an evaporative cooler delivers real relief at a fraction of that running cost.
