With the windows closed there is no air for it to draw in, so it cannot create airflow — and forcing it can strain the fan and depressurize the house.

How does whole house fan cooling work through air exchange?

A whole house fan sits in the ceiling below the attic and pulls cooler outdoor air through the living space, pushing hot indoor air up into the attic and out through vents. It cools through air exchange, not refrigeration, so it works best when outdoor air is genuinely cooler.

Because it swaps stale indoor air for fresh outdoor air quickly, a whole house fan can drop a home's temperature several degrees in minutes during a cool evening. That rapid air exchange is the entire mechanism — there's no compressor or refrigerant involved anywhere in the process.

Why do windows need to be open as the intake?
