A portable AC leaks water when the condensation it pulls from the air has nowhere to go — usually a full internal tank, a clogged or open drain plug, or a unit that isn’t sitting level. In very humid conditions it produces more condensate than it can self-evaporate. Empty the tank, check the drain, and level the unit.

Where does the water come from?

As a portable air conditioner cools, it pulls humidity from the air, and that moisture condenses into liquid water inside the unit. Normally it collects in an internal tank or self-evaporating system. Leaking means that condensate has found its way onto the floor instead.

The wetter the air, the more water the unit produces, so leaks often show up first during humid weather, when the machine works hardest to dry your indoor climate.

What are the common causes?

The usual culprits are a full internal reservoir that has stopped auto-evaporating, a clogged or missing drain plug, or a unit sitting unlevel so water pools toward one edge instead of the collection point. In very humid rooms, condensate can simply outpace the unit's evaporation.

Single-hose vs dual-hose evaporation

A single-hose unit, common from brands like Midea, pulls room air across the hot coil to help self-evaporate condensate before venting it out. A dual-hose unit from Whynter draws outside air separately, which is more efficient but produces more condensate to manage since it doesn't reuse room air the same way.

Window kit and exhaust hose issues

A poorly sealed window kit lets humid outdoor air back in around the exhaust hose, adding to the moisture load. Check that the kit panel is snug and the hose isn't sagging or kinked, which can trap condensate mid-run.

How do I stop the leak?

Empty the internal tank, check that the drain plug is secure and the drain line isn't kinked, and set the unit on a level surface. For continuous operation in humid conditions, connect a drain hose to gravity-drain the condensate to a floor drain or pan.

A model with a true self-evaporating design, like some LG and DeLonghi units, needs less manual draining, though none fully eliminate the tank in a very humid room.

If the unit is brand new and already leaking, double-check that the internal drain plug wasn't left in its shipping position and that no packing material is blocking the reservoir underneath the coil.

Sizing, BTU, CFM, and cooling capacity for your square footage

A unit's BTU rating and CFM airflow determine its cooling capacity, and both should match your square footage. An undersized unit sized for a smaller space than yours has to run constantly, producing more condensate than a correctly sized one.

Manufacturers list a coverage area in square feet on the box, but that figure usually assumes a standard ceiling height and normal sun exposure. A sunnier room, or one with high ceilings, needs a higher BTU rating than the floor plan alone suggests.

Compressor, SEER, and energy efficient operation

The compressor is what actually removes heat and moisture, and its efficiency is reflected in the unit's SEER-equivalent rating. An ENERGY STAR certified, energy efficient model wrings out humidity more effectively per hour of runtime than an older, less efficient one.

Portable air conditioner vs a dehumidifier for spot cooling

A portable air conditioner cools and dehumidifies together, which is why it produces so much condensate. A standalone dehumidifier only removes moisture without cooling, so if spot cooling one room is your real goal, the AC is doing double duty and draining accordingly.

If your real problem is a permanently damp room rather than heat, a dedicated dehumidifier alongside lighter cooling may leak far less, since it's built to route condensate away continuously rather than pool it in a tank.

Noise level and remote control features

Most modern units include a remote control and multiple fan speeds, and quieter models publish a specific noise level in decibels. A noisier compressor cycle often correlates with a unit working hard, which also means more condensate production.

Running cost

Running cost climbs with runtime, and constant water leakage is often a sign the unit is cycling more than it should for the space. Fixing the drain and leveling issue usually lowers both the mess and the electric bill together.
