Only propane heaters specifically rated "indoor-safe" are safe to use indoors, and only with ventilation and a working carbon monoxide alarm. These models include an oxygen depletion sensor (ODS) that shuts the unit off if oxygen drops too low. A standard outdoor propane heater must never be run inside — it can produce dangerous carbon monoxide.

What warning signs mean you should shut it off immediately?
Shut the heater off and get fresh air if you notice headache, dizziness, nausea, drowsiness or confusion — the classic early symptoms of CO exposure — or if a CO alarm sounds, the flame burns yellow or orange instead of blue, or you smell an unusual odor. Treat any of these as an emergency, not an inconvenience.
A healthy propane flame burns blue; a yellow or orange flame signals incomplete combustion and more CO.
