Propane heaters cover a huge range. A pocket-size radiant unit warms a tent; a roaring forced-air torpedo heats a whole garage. The right buying decision starts with matching the type to the job. Then check the specs and safety features that actually matter.

What actually determines how well a propane heater performs?

BTU output and heater type together decide performance. BTU sets the raw heat — from about 4,000 on a small radiant unit to 125,000+ on a large forced-air heater. Type (radiant, forced air, or convection) decides how that heat output is delivered and whether it suits your space.

BTU and heat output explained

Raw BTU tells you capacity. It does not tell you fit, and that is where most buyers go wrong. A 125,000-BTU heater is right for an open garage and wrong for a small enclosed room, no matter how impressive the number looks on the box.

A useful tie-breaker is how long you will run the heater in one place. Radiant units suit staying put — a workshop bench, a hunting blind, a small indoor-rated space — because they warm you directly and quietly. Forced air torpedoes are built to warm a cold space fast, then get dialed back. They are not for hours of close-range comfort, since the noise and fuel burn wear on you over a long session.

What size (BTU) propane heater do you need — zone heating by the numbers?

A rough rule is about 10 BTU per cubic foot of space you want to heat, adjusted up for poor insulation or open air. A small tent needs only a few thousand BTU. A two-car garage often needs 40,000–60,000 BTU. A large open workshop can call for 100,000+ BTU.

Cubic feet, not square feet, is the right basis for propane sizing, because these heaters often work in tall or open spaces. Check the manufacturer's label. An indoor safe propane heater explicitly states "indoor use" and includes an ODS sensor. If a heater does not clearly say indoor-rated, treat it as outdoor only. Running an outdoor-only heater in an enclosed space risks dangerous carbon monoxide buildup.
