There is no fixed number — run it until the room reaches your target humidity, then let it maintain that level. Most homes settle around 8 to 12 hours daily, but a very damp basement may need to run nearly continuously, while a mildly damp room might only need a few hours. Set it by humidity, not the clock.

What actually determines how long it needs to run?

Three things determine runtime: how damp the room starts, and how big and well-sealed it is. The third is how well the unit's pints per day capacity matches that coverage. A correctly sized dehumidifier reaches its target within a few hours in an averagely damp room. It then cycles as needed. An undersized unit in a wet basement may run almost nonstop, and a musty odor can linger until it catches up.

Outdoor weather feeds into it too. Humid, rainy stretches push more moisture into a home's indoor climate and lengthen run time. This is why a single "hours per day" figure is misleading.

Water tank capacity, pints per day, and square footage coverage

An auto shut-off stops the compressor once the tank fills or the target humidity is met, whichever comes first. Holding relative humidity below roughly 50% is also the simplest way to prevent mold and musty odor from developing in a basement or closet.

A clean filter matters too. A dusty one restricts airflow and makes the unit run longer to remove the same amount of water. Rinsing or replacing the filter every few weeks during heavy summer use keeps runtime close to what the manufacturer's specs predict. Otherwise it creeps upward as airflow degrades.

Is it bad to run a dehumidifier around the clock?

No, it is not harmful to the machine, but continuous runtime past your target humidity just wastes electricity. A portable unit typically draws somewhere around 300–700 watts while the compressor is active. Needless nonstop running adds up on a power bill.

If runtime happens overnight in a bedroom, a quiet-rated model matters more than raw capacity. Letting the humidistat manage runtime, rather than running on high all night, also keeps the compressor's noise to a minimum.
