Getting humidifier size right is what separates a unit that quietly keeps a room comfortable from one that either never moves the needle or leaves your windows dripping. Sizing is a two-part question — how much space the unit can cover, and how long it runs before you have to refill it — and both come down to specs printed on the box rather than anything you have to guess at.
What types of humidifier are there: cool mist, warm mist, ultrasonic or evaporative?
Cool mist and warm mist describe the output temperature; ultrasonic and evaporative describe the mechanism. Any of the four can be sized correctly or incorrectly for a room — type is a comfort and safety choice, and sizing is a separate math problem, so pick the type first, then size it.

An evaporative humidifier pulls air through a wet wick or filter, self-regulates somewhat as the air dries the filter, and doesn't produce mineral dust — at the cost of a filter you have to replace. Humidifiers are rated two ways: by coverage area in square feet, and by mist output in gallons of water added to the air per day. Small personal units cover a nightstand or under about 300 square feet; room units handle roughly 300–500 square feet; console units are built for 1,000 square feet or more.
Coverage area is the headline sizing number, but mist output — measured in gallons per day (GPD) — is what actually drives it. A personal humidifier might put out under a gallon a day, a mid-size room unit one to two gallons, and a large console unit three gallons or more. The bigger the room, the more moisture has to be added every day just to hold a steady humidity level, which is why coverage and output rise together on the spec sheet.
What size humidifier do you need for your room? Square footage and dry air
Measure the room's square footage and match it to the unit's coverage rating, then size up if the room has high ceilings, is drafty, or has genuinely dry air to begin with. For a typical bedroom or office, a small-to-medium unit rated for 300–500 square feet is usually right; for an open living area, step up to a console.
The rating on the box assumes an averagely sealed room of standard ceiling height. Real rooms leak — through single-pane windows, under doors, up a stairwell in an open-plan layout — and every leak is moisture the humidifier has to keep replacing against dry air pulling it back out. High ceilings are the most commonly overlooked factor: coverage ratings are based on floor area, but a room with a vaulted or nine-foot ceiling holds far more air volume than the square footage suggests, so a unit sized to the floor plan can fall short. An oversized unit without a humidistat can push a small, well-sealed room well past a comfortable level, causing condensation on cold windows, damp patches on walls, and the mold conditions humidity control is supposed to prevent. The fix is either a smaller unit or, better, one with a humidistat that shuts off at your target.
Over-humidifying is the mirror image of undersizing, and it is easy to do in a tight modern bedroom. When should you stop sizing a portable and go whole-house?
If you are trying to humidify most of a home rather than one or two rooms, portable sizing stops making sense — you would need several large units refilled constantly. At that point a whole-house humidifier plumbed into the furnace, sized in gallons per day for the home's square footage, is the more practical answer.
Portable units are sized per room for a reason: past a certain footprint, keeping several of them filled becomes a bigger chore than the dryness was a problem.
