What can a programmable thermostat do?

A programmable thermostat lets you preset temperatures for different times of day and days of the week — cooler overnight, warmer before you wake, setback while you're out. It runs that scheduling automatically, but everything is entered manually at the wall, with no remote access or automatic adjustment.

Honeywell has sold this class of thermostat for decades, and a basic model remains one of the cheapest upgrades available for lowering an HVAC bill without any connected features at all.
