Voice control through Alexa (Amazon) or Google Home lets you adjust the temperature by asking rather than opening an app, which is convenience rather than a comfort or savings feature on its own. An energy report, sent weekly or monthly, breaks down runtime and estimated savings so you can see whether your schedule is actually working.
The energy report is the more useful feature long-term: it turns an invisible utility bill into a room-by-room, week-by-week picture of when your HVAC system actually ran, which is the data that tells you whether a schedule change helped or not.
How much energy savings can you actually expect?
ENERGY STAR-certified smart thermostats are estimated to save around 8% on heating and cooling costs for a typical household, mainly by avoiding the waste of heating or cooling an empty home on a fixed schedule. Actual energy savings depend heavily on how inconsistent your old habits were — a household that already used a programmable schedule carefully will see less gain than one that never adjusted the thermostat at all.
