Yes — most electric fireplaces contain a real 1,500-watt heater that genuinely warms one room, typically the equivalent of about 5,000 BTU. But the heat and the flame are separate systems: the flickering fire is a visual effect, and the actual warmth comes from an ordinary electric heating element behind it.
How does an electric fireplace produce heat?
A plug-in electric fireplace uses a standard electric resistance heater — usually a fan-forced coil or ceramic element rated at 1,500 watts — hidden behind or below the flame display. It warms the air by convection exactly like a space heater, then a fan pushes that warm air out into the room.
Because it's electric resistance heating, essentially all of the electricity it draws becomes heat in the room, the same as any space heater. Hardwired 240-volt wall units can run higher and put out more heat, but those need an electrician, not a wall socket.

Insert and freestanding units
An insert is built to slide into an existing masonry fireplace or a purpose-built mantel, so it suits a home that already has a fireplace opening. A freestanding cabinet-style unit needs no existing opening and can go anywhere near an outlet, which makes it the easiest retrofit for a room with no fireplace at all.
Wall-mounted and TV stand fireplaces

No — on almost every electric fireplace the flame and the heater are independent. You can run the flame effect on its own with the heat switched off, which is why many owners leave the "fire" glowing year-round and only turn the heater on in winter.
The flame itself is a low-power LED flame or projected light effect that uses only a few watts, so running it for ambiance costs almost nothing. Manufacturers market their LED flame systems as "realistic flame" technology, and quality genuinely varies — some use layered LED flame panels with mist or holographic depth, others a simpler flicker. The heater is the part that drives your electricity bill. Remote control and thermostat

Can an electric fireplace replace central heating?
No. An electric fireplace is a supplemental, single-room heater, not a whole-home system. It's ideal for zone heating the room you're actually in while the central thermostat runs lower, but one 1500-watt unit cannot heat a whole house or multiple rooms.
Used as zone heating, it can genuinely lower a heating bill — warming the living room while the rest of the house sits cooler is the standard way people cut costs. The look and the warmth are billed very differently.
This split is genuinely useful for budgeting. Many owners leave the flame glowing for ambiance year-round at trivial cost and only switch the heater on when they actually want warmth. Does an electric fireplace dry out or affect the air?
An electric fireplace produces no combustion, no flame, no fumes and no carbon monoxide, so it doesn't consume oxygen or vent anything into the room. Like any heater, though, warming the air lowers its relative humidity, so a room can feel dry after hours of use in winter.
