Many can. Learning smart thermostats use built-in motion sensors and your manual adjustments to build a heating and cooling schedule automatically over the first week or so. Not every model does this, though — some are simply programmable, meaning you enter the schedule yourself rather than having the device infer it.

How does a learning smart thermostat actually work?

The thermostat logs every manual temperature change alongside the time of day and, on many models, whether its sensors detect anyone home. After several days it spots patterns — cooler nights, a warm-up before you wake — and drafts a repeating schedule from them.
