The only real downsides are a higher purchase price, a slightly bigger footprint, and more energy use than the room strictly needs. Cleaning effectiveness is not hurt.

What does "too big" really mean for an air purifier?

Oversizing an air purifier affects cost and convenience, never cleaning quality. A high-CADR unit in a small room reaches its target air-change rate sooner, so you can drop it to a low setting and still clear the air several times an hour.

There's no ceiling where a purifier becomes "too powerful" for a room's air quality. Extra capacity just gets used more gently, the same way a large-capacity car engine can idle just fine in traffic.

What specs set the size — CADR, HEPA, and square footage?

A washable pre-filter traps large debris before it reaches the HEPA layer, and air changes per hour is the real number to watch when sizing — most guidance targets four to five full air changes per hour for allergy-sensitive households.

Are there real downsides to going bigger — energy efficient or not?

Three practical ones: a larger unit costs more up front, takes up more floor space, and draws more power at high speed. Run on low, though, an oversized purifier is often more energy efficient than a small one straining at maximum to keep up.

How should you size for PM2.5, dust, smoke, and allergens — and filter replacement?

Match or modestly exceed the room's needs. Fine PM2.5 particulates from smoke and dust are exactly what CADR and true HEPA are rated against. An undersized unit stuck at full speed clears allergens more slowly and runs its filter through more air per hour, which shortens filter replacement intervals.

An oversized unit, by contrast, spreads that same workload over a lower, gentler setting, which can actually stretch filter replacement out further. The EPA lists PM2.5 exposure as a real health concern, which is the practical reason to lean generous on sizing rather than cutting it close.

Is it ever better to buy the smaller unit anyway?

Rarely, unless space or budget genuinely rules out the larger option. The only scenario where a smaller air purifier makes more sense is a room you'll almost never close off. An undersized unit in an open-plan area is fighting a much bigger effective square footage than its rating assumes.
